I'm Interested in learning about and practicing Meditation, but I don't even know where to begin. I find that I'm always really stressed out and I can't seem to make myself focus on things. My School work has been sleeping since my freshman year and I always feel overwhelmed and extremely stressed out. I've heard that meditation can help me learn to focus and keep my thoughts collected.

Like I said, I'm lost as to where to begin. If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

  1. Vipassana meditation.Meditation through breathing and movement. It helps you focus on every physical motion you make.

Google Ruth Denison. She runs a center in Joshua Tree and is one of the foremost teachers in this field.

  2. Meditation just means living in the moment. There is no trick to it except you have to practice what works for you. You find something in the here and now to focus on - your breath, the way your hands feel, the quality of the light, whatever. Some people appreciate guided meditations like you can get on DVD or whatever, but that didn't do it for me, for me it is just kind of a mental stepping back and release. You allow your thoughts to pass through you, instead of being them.

Like, if you think of that deadline tomorrow and feel a rush of panic, you just sort of say to yourself: There, okay, I just thought of a deadline and had a rush of panic. And you notice the way the rush feels in your body, carefully as if it is the first time ever ... etc. The goal is to be in the present moment as it is arising, and see it new, unique, and complete, without expectation or judgment of whether you are doing well or poorly, or noticing the right things, or what is supposed to happen next.

If you do this whenever it occurs to you to do it, you will get better at it, be able to maintain it longer, and become more likely to habitually operate in a calm receptive state, with your anxieties in perspective. You might also try to practice meditating during solo physical exercise, like yoga or running or just shooting baskets ... I think it helps, anyway. There's no right way to meditate, it's what works for you.

  3. Check my blog about meditation thru hypnosis - the power of mind @ http://hypnosis-knowthyself.blogspot.com...

  4. There are many different forms of meditation being taught. Classes are probably available in your local area. For a beginner it is great to have personal training from an experienced teacher. You also have the association and friendship with a whole new group of people who are learning and practicing. I started going to yoga classes when I was seven years old with my mother.

Some of your options include yoga and taichi. Tai chi is a slow moving form of martial art but it is totally about relaxation and meditation.  Hatha Yoga is a combination of amazing slow stretching exercises and 'pranayam' deep breathing exercises. They not only keep you healthy but make you really relaxed.  Check your local newspaper classifieds or on the notice boards in shops can give you addresses for classes..

While attending these classes once or twice a week you can browse your local library for books on meditation techniques also. It really opens up a whole new healthy world to you.

Mantra meditation is very powerful for focusing and controlling the mind because of the spiritual sound vibration.

You can visit Hare Krishna temples to learn about it or check out this website <www.purebhakti.com>  - mantra meditation

For stress also try massage, reiki and acupuncture/ acupressure as well as nervine herbs, available in health food shops. Gotu kola (Brahmi herb) helps focus during meditation.

Some meditation experts suggest thinking of your mind as a glass of muddy water and meditation helps bring clarity. Many forms of meditation result in the clearing of one's mind.
