On Stargate: Atlantis, why doesn't the expedition team fly Atlantis to the Milky Way galaxy?

Question

They have been worried about their enemies using Atlantis' gate to get to Earth, they had to wage at least one war, and they have to keep the location of the city a secret. It generally seems like a hassle to maintain a presence in the Pegasus galaxy. I can seem them wanting to stay for diplomatic reasons or wanting to explore, but I think they would be better off putting Atlantis somewhere closer to Earth.
