  1. I was going to say 1707 for the UK, but then I saw your question of England becoming part of the Great Britain first. Good question! Any English people around that can answer that?  hmmm... According the evil Wikipedia, 1800.

  2. England has always been part of Great Britain.  Great Britain is the name of the island.

  3. England joined with Scotland and became Great Britain on the coronation of James I on 25 July 1603.

However, this does not mean that England ceased to be a sovereign nation.  Even though England and Scotland shared monarchs, they had independent laws and were only united dynastically.  They remained separate nations until 1 May 1707, when the United Kingdom of Great Britain was formed.  This was a single political entity and as of that date, England ceased being a sovereign nation.

    Hope that helps.
