The first poster is correct. If there is EDGE coverage it should change automatically.

You might need to refresh your device on the network. On the Home Screen there should be an icon named Manage Connections. Click that and then click the option that says Turn All Connections Off. Wait about 30 seconds, and then click where it says Restore Connections. See if that works. If it doesn't, try a hard reset next: remove the battery from the device (while it is still powered on) for 10 seconds, then reinsert.
