On a French passport, which name is in CAPITAL LETTERS?

Can someone please confirm for me whether the surname (family name) or first name (given name) is written in UPPER CASE in a french passport?

A fraudster has used my credit card to make lots of payments, and when queried, my credit card has sent me the details of the customer account associated with the payments, and a photocopy of the guy's French passport. It also has a form completed by the account holder.

The interesting thing is that the name given in the passport in capital letters is the name placed second when he is asked to write his full name. Is this right?

  1. On a French passport you have the designations in French and in English (in italic).

    Nom/Surname

    Prénom/Given Name

    etc...

The surname itself is in capital letter.

You also have two lines at the bottom of the page, first one gives surname and name in capital letters and the second one the passport number + other coding

Here is an example of a recent French passport.

If you are in the US you report the false/stolen passport to your authorities and they - supposedly - pass on the information to the French authorities. You might send a copy of your complaint to the French Embassy.

  2. I'll confirm everything written above.

If the English police won't deal with it, contact the French embassy or nearest consulate in the UK. I am surprised though, try to contact another police officer in the UK.

As for your last question, the answer is YES. Especially on letters. On forms, it's more common however to have the surname first but it is not impossible if the full name is asked to write first name then surname. Good luck!
