  1. Depends what you are training for, if you are going for a sprinters workout, then 8x400m aka 8 sets of 1 lap aka 8 sets of .25 miles is enough of a workout. If you want a hardcore long distance workout, then 32 laps, or 8 miles is enough.

  2. 25 laps, but switch directions every 5 so you don't put too much stress on one leg

  3. Well, 4 laps = 1 mile so you decide.

I think a couple miles is a good amout say 2 to 4.

  4. This is a very general question, and as such it is very difficult to answer.  this leaves many factors out of consideration, such as your athletic ability, if you are in shape, what running you've done in the past, if the track is indoor or outdoor, if it is standard length...

To give a bit of information to help you, a standard outdoor track is 400 meters, or about 1/4 of a mile.  4 laps is one mile, as far as most people are concerned.  A standard indoor track is 200 meters, meaning 8 laps to the mile.

depending on your pace, fitness, ability, and more, you may be able to run 1/4 of a mile, or many miles.
