  1. Airflow is correct about the strands of fiber, most common today being graphite. The rods are baked under pressure with thermo-plastic epoxies, that is where the stregnth comes from

Often they are made from carbon fiber or graphite, these are very thin strands however they are woven together and heated in the making of them, they are pulled tight under tension and the rod is formed. Rod manufactures are also starting to add titanium strands to the fibers to increase the strength.
