  1. Here is a site I came across a while back that does a good job of summing up bike gearing.

    http://www.kenkifer.com/bikepages/tourin...

After reading it the thing to keep in mind is to use your gears and use them often.

    Enjoy the ride.

  2. It's around a 110. Pros use many gears - that's why they have them. The standard high gear -if that's what you meant to ask is 53x11. They use bigger rings for some TTs etc. Many solid road riders use 53x12 (most common), some 53x11 compact gears: 50x11.

It's 110 when calc. with a 27" tire. You didn't spec. size - that's why I said "around". Also, circumference is not used - it the diameter.

  3. for gear inches, we go directly to the site of Mr. Know-It-All, Sheldon Brown (RIP)

According to that calculator with a 53/13 and a 700c-23 (tire size affects gear inches), you get 107.

To get that, you have to take the ratio 53 to 15 and mulitply that by the circumference of the tire.  To do this with your bike, put your gears into the combo you want.  Point the bike backwards.  Then put one crank arm straight down on some mark.  Push the bike until the crank has made one complete revolution.  Make another mark.  Measure from first mark to second mark.

This is how a USA Cycling official measures the gear inches on a junior's bike.  How do I know?  I am a USAC official, and this is how I was taught to do it.  Actually, we mark the limit beforehand.  If the crank falls outside the limit, we know the junior is running a gear combo that produces too many gear inches.
