On a global level a few societies have what you would call a pluralistic model of ethnic relations. Here different ethnic groups share a geographic area. No one way of life is elevated as being better than another is. Ethnic differences are respected and admired. An example of this in Europe would be Switzerland. Closer to home we can look to our neighbors to the north (Canada) to see how well this model of ethnic accommodation is working. Of course I am being facetious about the French and English speaking of Canada peacefully coexisting. Why does the model of pluralism not work in most societies?

  1. The issue for most is that of a knowledge of history, or at least a partial knowledge. In history, the differing races have clashed incredibly violently for varying reasons. Some people live in the past; a past they were not alive to know. Those individuals are the ones that become racist, influencing their children into racism. Their ignorance merely adds the fuel to the fire.

As an example, in the United States, many southern rednecks wave the rebel flag calling blacks the 'n word,' talking about how they should be hung. The Civil War ended long ago, yet it lives on through them and their refusal to let the past go.

  2. We are a mean species. We hate what we do not understand.
