At Petsmart they had CareFresh bedding that came in 10L, 23L and 60L (i'm planning on getting a dwarf hamster and the cage i'm talking about is the Critter Trail Outlook.)

  1. get two females, they can live together and not fight. two males will fight when they grow up and a male and a female will have babies. you need to cover the floor of the cage with a thin layer of sawdust, and give them bedding

  2. Oh please dont get a crittertrail :(

I know they look like they're fun and all, but they're not good for your new little friend.

The plastic is dangerous and unhealthy. It's also easily escapable, stuffy and a major pain in the rear to clean.

Get yourself a good sized wire cage (3 levels preferably)... thats their ideal home.

If thats not possible, then get an aquarium. Much better for them, and much easier for you.

As far as bedding goes, get the big bag o' aspen chips and find somewhere to store it in the house. You only need a small layer of bedding in the cage though, 3/4 of an inch (approximately) is more than enough.

Also, keep in mind Dwarf (Russian) Hamsters are pack animals. So you should get 2 or 3 if you have your heart set on that breed.

If you only want one, get a Syrian (Teddy Bear) hamster. They're solitary. Very much solitary actually, never get 2 Syrians... but they're sweet as all heck with their person. Dwarfs are a bit skittish for my taste.

Good luck and enjoy your new friend(s)! :)

  3. In any cage you should have at least have 1-2 inches of bedding...hamsters like to burrow...3/4 inches is not nearly enough bedding...

this is the bedding I use...the hammies like it because it's really soft and great for burrowing...i like it because despite how small the packaging seems, the bedding is packed really tight so it actually lasts for 3-4 changes.

DO NOT get this bedding, it gets stuck in the vacuum if you don't pick up all the pieces from the floor:

as far as cages go i currently have the habitrail ovo but if you don't have a big budget for the additions that are pretty much a must for the cage I have then I would go with something like this:

    (it comes in multi-color too)

crittertrails are NOT bad! I've kept all my hamsters in this basic crittertrail cage and they were all fine. This cage is nice  it gives ur hammies space to roam and you can add to it. plus it has good ventilation with the wires. I've never had a hamster escape from them. Aquariums don't offer very much ventilation so your hammie could easily get over heated. COUNTLESS hamster owners use crittertrail and have no complaints.

The only reason I no longer have crittertrail is because I gave my hamsters away with the cages then later decided to get 2 more hammies and wanted to try something different.

    Hope I helped :-)

  4. As much as you need to over the bottem

A little thicker in the cold days

  5. 20l would be the easiest to stor but in the long term 60l the cheapest

you need hardley anything for a hamster cage about 5mm on the floor

don't forget to dwarf hamsters like company :)
