The manufacturer of ever racquet specifes a usual range for string tension (low to high).  For example, a racquet may specify 50-60lbs.  Some of the newer types of string materials (polyster based monofilament) recommend that the usual string tension for a racquet be reduced by 10% due to the properties of the material (see Luxilon strings) (http://www.tennis.com/yourgame/gear/gene...

    These manufacturer specified values are recommendations only.  There is a wide range of tension preferences amongst players.  For any given racquet, loose strings lead to more velocity of the ball off of the strings while higher tension reduces ball rebound speed but increases control.  Some pro players string upwards of 75 lbs for increased control because their racquet head speed is so great they have no need for more power.

    Note that a larger racquet head at the same string tension results in a significantly greater ball speed coming off of the strings.
