Question:

On a train, what does Y-8 mean?

i was riding NJ transit and the conductor says "next stop woodbridge, (or some c**p, i forget) attention all crew, Y-8"

I have ridden alot but ive never heard the Y-8 command before, wth does it mean, and why did the conductor say it with such emphasis and seriousness?

  1. it's called "coding", different industries have different codes so outsiders don't know what it means.

    Example: 10-4 = police code for A-OK. comes from ham radio code.


  2. I haven't been in railroading since the last ice age, but maybe since the rein of the buffalo. I've never heard that one either. Probably something unique to New Jersey Transit.

    and I have heard almost everything yelled you can imagine LOL.

    It must be a local expression for somehtinmg, perhaps get ready for lunch??

    Or perhpas the conductor just wanted to sound important.
