On a vw beetle 1600 air cooled engine i am installing new pistons and am supposed to put arrow twords

Question

the flywheel but the set of pistons i bought do not have and arrow they have a half moon and a sto on opposite sides so which one goes to the flywheel ????

If I remember right, on the bottom side of piston where the wrist pin goes in, on one side or the other, there was an extra tab cast into the piston. It was either "up" or the "flywheel side" . I don't remember for sure. I don't know if they are still cast into the pistons anymore.

superman, you better be using a manual that you dig up somewhere to overhaul this vw.  You'll make a big mistake listening to people that think they remember but are not sure.  I no longer have it, but this manual was the best for me.  See if you can find a copy of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Volkswagen Repair". I swear it is the best VW repair manual ever made. I'm not sure when VW changed its (what about the all the other stuff, have you also committed it all to memory?)
