On an FM3 for Mexico as I understand you can bring personal belongings only once?

After that you are subject to importation taxs etc. So my main question is: If this is true, is a vehicle considered part of this one time move in subject to no importation taxs? or can you bring the vehicle in separate from your personal belongings?

(In my case it would be months or 1-2 years.)

  1. Rolly Brook gives a good explanation of the move to Mexico under Useful Information on the website below.

  2. I just brotght a car in on a FM3 its $40 plus a $400 deposit, you get it back after you take the car out. You donht have to pay taxes on the car though I didnt get charged any importation taxes on my belongings in Reynosa i just said Its my MENAJE and i can have it those are my belongings i need to live here. The car you need it in your name and you need your licence and its easy you just have to pay in dollars.

  3. Your vehicle is separate and only if you want to legalize and plate it would it be subject to and 'Importation tax"

If you are going for two years you may want to look at Plating your car for two years as you can in Canada to make your return a little easier.  You can then buy insurance on line for your trip home.lewisandlewisinsurance.com (for both)

When you renew your F.M.3 your stamp will also include your vehicle.

Sounds like you already have an F.M.3 but if you do not then you will have to get a temporary import vehicle sticker foe about $30.00 and deal with Aduana in the state or city in which you are going to reside

  4. When you get an FM3 you have 6 months from that time, in which to move househlod goods like furniture to Mexico.  Your vehicle does NOT count .  When you get your FM3 at the Mexican consulate BEFORE coming to Mexico ( this is best)  , also ask to get your car permit.  The car permit is good forever...as long as you keep your FM3 renewed every year.  This saves you having to stand in line at the car permit office in a border town to get the permit...it can take hours.  If you have an SUV or big car, or a truck and you are just going to stuff it with belongings...and not bring furniture...that is fine.  Moving furniture here costs a fortune and you can buy new stuff for less than the moving costs.  However you do it...pack neatly, label every box with a number, have several copies of a list naming everything in each box.  Only about one in every 12 vehicles gets inspected, but if it is yours...they are much less likely to have you unpack the entire vehicle if you show them your list and are very up front about everything.  If i can help you in any way, just email me.
