On average, all together, what percentage of our money ends up going to to government?

One person told me that at the end of the day, all things considered, about 40% of our money ends up going to to government in one way or another.

  1. The U.S. GDP is about $13.6 trillion, and the federal budget is about $2.9 trillion, so the federal government gets about 22%.  The amount that goes to state, local, and sales taxes will depend on where you live, but will generally take up around another 10%.

    If you are not wealthy, it's a much, much smaller percentage.

    Also consider that the weathy are spending much more and thus paying much more in sales tax.
