On average, how much does it cost to live in NYC?

In a few years I'm planning on moving to New York City and spend a couple of years there. I've heard it's really expensive to live there, so I was probably going to save up for a few years before moving. What would an average 1-bedroom decent apartment be in Manhattan? Just average, nothing fancy, but not like a crappy apartment.

expect to spend 1500-ish if not more a month

try finding a place in Brooklyn

still expensive, but not as much as manhattan

My brother lives in Manhattan is a NYU dorm apartment thing for grad students. He pays $1300 a month for one bedroom in a four bedroom apartment with a bad kitchen and no living room area.
