  1. first define rich, poor and middle class

  2. Labor force:

    516.4 million (2007 est.)

    Labor force - by occupation:

    agriculture: 60%

    industry: 12%

    services: 28% (2003)

    Unemployment rate:

    7.2% (2007 est.)

Of its nearly 1 billion inhabitants, an estimated 350-400 million are below the poverty line, 75 per cent of them in the rural areas.

India's middle class constituted less than 10% of the population in 1984 and 1985, according to the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER).

Since then, it has more than tripled, but is still less than 20%.

According to a study, India's rich population has observed a growth of 21 percent in 2006 thanks to a rise of stocks and real estate markets. A study conducted by Merrill Lynch and Capgemini, the number of people with an investible resource of more than $1 million, other than a primary residence, rose to 100,015 in India just behind Singapore (21.2 percent).
