It's widely variable, and it depends on how you define "agent."  There are about 2000 NFL players and about 1200 people who consider themselves NFL agents, but many of those "agents" don't represent any players at all, while some agents, such as the Condon brothers, represent dozens of players at the same time.  I know that it's normal for a fairly successful NFL agent to represent 3 or 4 players at a time, but I don't know if this is really the mathematical average.

    Since agents typically get 10% of a player's paycheck and between 15% and 20% of a player's endorsements/appearance fees/etc, representing 3-4 NFL players is a pretty good living.  For example, if you have the good fortune to represent Peyton Manning, you'll make something around $5 million per year by being his agent.  In comparison, representing a rookie 7th round pick will probably make you less than $50,000 per year.
