On birth control...period early...is this normal?

I've been on ortho-tri-cyclen for almost a year and a half, my period is supposed to come Wednesday...but it's here today. I've been a little sloppy on taking my pills on time...sometimes I'll take them anywhere from two hours later to the next day. Is this normal or should I go see my doctor?

  1. You should try to take your pill the same time every day.  I set an alarm on my cell phone and take it at lunch time.  If you're having a hard time remembering to take your pill at the right time, then you might want to talk to your doctor about alternative methods of contraceptives.

If you begin taking your pill at the same time every day and you're still having unusual bleeding, then I'd see your doctor about changing the amount of hormones in your pill.

  2. Hi,

I've used OTC for over 5 years, and I've found that when I'm sloppy about taking my pill (taking it a day late), my period comes early, just like you described. I talked to my doc about it, and it's normal, your body is just a little confused. Keep taking your pills as normal (don't restart a pack) and things should straighten themselves out by your next period. (As long as you try to be consistent with the pills.)

By the way, this period might be a little irregular, like weaker at first and then heavier, or strong at first then stop totally days before you are supposed to start a new pack. Just stick to the routine, and your body will resynch.
