On blackberry phones, does telenav maps use the internet just to be on it?

depends on what plan you have. ask your provider for GPS only.

You have to connect to the telenav service to view the maps if that's what you mean. There are no maps stored on your phone( like other GPS systems). If you are using just the maps the googlemaps application(free) is much faster. But if you need the turn by turn directions telenav is really good.
