Question:

On crutches! Should I?

My friend wants me to join her on a Caribbean cruise later this summer. Problem is that I am in a full leg cast now, and possibly will be then, definitely will be on crutches. My crutches are not a problem, I am very good on them and they are matter-of-fact. But besides that, should I wait - maybe next year?

  1. If you can pull it off go for it.  Its not every year you get to take a cruise.

  2. OH heck no!  Go on your cruise.  I would run it by the Dr. and tell them your plans maybe they can give you a date when they plan on removing the cast.  Go have a great time.

  3. dont let the leg prevent you from having a good time there is so much you can still do i would go

  4. Late summer is like, six or eight more weeks away.  You probably will not still be in a full leg cast, I should think.  You will probably be in physical therapy, though.  I think you should direct this question to your doctor.  We had a similar situation with my son.  He had a leg cast removed just before our vacation once.  He was barely able to stand on his leg.  But through dogged determination, he was able to quickly recover enough to walk pretty well after a couple of days.

So, if your bones are healed you will probably be able to get along with just a cane or completely unassisted by then.  You most certainly will not be normal nor have any stamina in that leg.

As far as the cruise part of the trip you should have no problems.  As far as shore excursions go, I couldn't say.  The only advice I have for going ashore is to wait until the crowd leaves.  I do this anyway.  After 15 to 30 minutes the rush is over and you can depart at your own pace without hindering anyone else.  The cruise personnel are usually quite helpful in this regard.

  5. I'd still go. You can get around on them you'll be fine.

My friend broke her leg on a cruise once and still had a great time!

  6. don't ever pass up a chance to go on a cruise !!! my sister went on one with a leg cast and cruches and had a blast. the people on the ship were very helpful and she didn't have much trouble.. go have FUN !!

  7. I have been on many cruises where there were people who could not walk.  Most used a wheel chair, scooter, or walker.  The cruise lines do take actions to accommodate people with disabilities and injuries.  So you will not be a burden on them.

I say go on the cruise, BUT I suggest that you get and use a wheel chair (or scooter) instead of the crutches because while most of your cruise in the Caribbean will be a smooth ride, there may be some rocking that will make it more of a challenge for you with crutches.  And, while cruise ships are fully accessible with elevators going to all decks, its just  a lot easier to get around in a wheelchair than on crutches.   And you will not seem out of place in the wheelchair.

  8. you really should contact the cruise line and tell them first, they might not let you on the ship.
