several times a day you are able to cross to the mainland. In case you travel by train (from Sicily to the mainland, San Giovanni), it does not cost anything extra. Should you travel by car it costs 25 EUR!

You'll need to go to the Messina port terminal (take a cab or a bus from the train station). Crossings are frequent and cost about a euro one way.

There are actually 2 options. Addition to the Messina ferry you can also get the ferry which goes from the North of Italy to the Aelion Islands and down to Sicily.

where at in Sicily you are coming from if you coming far from Messina then just stay on the train you can cross over that way and also go to the look out on the top deck because once you get on the boat it takes about 55 minutes to cross to the main land.
