Why is it that the magazine puts [parentheses] around certain words. It happens nearly every time I read one.

  1. Because the magazine is adding parenthetical information.

    Isn't that obvious?

The writer or editor wants you to be able to understand the quoted sentence clearly.

The classic example of vocal emphasis and written communication usually is Helen of Troy.

IS this the face that launched a hundred ships?

Is THIS the face that launched a hundred ships?

Is this THE FACE that launched a hundred ships?

Is this the face that launched A HUNDRED SHIPS?

Each had a different meaning for the statement.....so this is the same with parenthical information.  The reader needs to be able to understand the context of what someone is saying.....especially if the speaker quoted uses the dreaded IT....what is IT?  So some outside information is added and enclosed in parentheses.

I hope this answer helps you,.
