  1. They are strapped in.

  2. you are strapped in with a 5 point harnest so you cant fall out

  3. the pilot and co pilot are strapped in. But on some blackhawks the guys sitting on the edge are normal air assault or a quick reaction force they are held in by a safety line. But in the movies its just that. And if your sitting on the seat you have a seatbelt on also so safety is a key factor.

  4. Some do stand on the skids and hold on tight. They aren't strapped in at all. There is a harness system though. I have sat on flights in the past in the cargo door with my legs hanging out and have not been strapped in at all, but I don't suggest it. Probably not the smartest thing in the world. Of course that was in straight and level flight.

  5. well reffering to the door gunners, for instance... during most maneuvers the "gravity" vector stays centered relative to the floor of the chopper, even if the helicopter is turning to either side. so basically they cannot fall away from the chopper because no sideways force is pushing you out. more than that they usually use some kind of harness to make them protected from falling over during unusual maneuvers that create the lateral force. simply sitting on sa skid while the pilot is maneuvering wildly is not a wise thing to do, in case you are not safely linked to the helicopter body.

  6. I have a friend who went to a military academy. As he described it, if you don't be careful, you will fall. If you are sitting in the chairs, there is a "seat belt" that you buck up. Depend on the helicopter, you may get 5 point seat belt, normal seat belt with ankle buckles to make sure you don't fall, etc. If you are talking about what you see in the movies, there is a handle for you to hold. These helicopters don't really tilt more than 15 degrees so you could hold onto it. However, for helicopters like Apache or more advanced helicopters (first of all, they are enclosed) that do tilt more than 15 degrees, you definitely would not sit on the edge.
