On reflection, why do we still use columns in newspapers?

I think the use of columns must have had something to do with printing techniques, but with computers today we don't need to use columsn. Where else but a newspaper do we use columsn. They are such a pain to format if using in a document.

  3. It's easier to read rather than having a large block of text.

  4. Good point, but I think a lot of the attraction of newspapers nowadays is that they are old fashioned, and people don't like change.

  5. I think it has something to do with the ease of reading a newspaper with columns. I can't really imagine a newspaper without - it would be very difficult to read and look disorganised.

    I think it looks quite neat, but I take your point on the difficulties of formatting when using in a document.

  6. All reading matter is in a column. Whether it be in a single or in multiple columns. depending on the width of the document or page. It is easier on the eye to read 2 or 3 columns rather than 1 spread across the page. It also keeps the layout tidy and from looking like a dogs breakfast. If you know what you are doing columns are no hassle and the most practical way of devising a page layout.
