All he was a mediocre catcher who always threw sidearm and more often than not, landed in centerfield.

  1. Because of what could have been. Really really sad.

  2. cause he was the captain

  3. Are you talking about the same Thurman Munson? Seriously.

  4. i would be willing to say that you know absolute zero about thurman's career from this question

he was far from mediocre, he was one of the best catchers of that era and has credentials to possibly go into the hall of fame in the future...he was a leader on some yankees teams of the late 70s that had little leadership and direction, and was an instrumental part on two world series championship teams from that time frame...what else do you want?

  5. Shame on you!

  6. EFF- YOU -SEE -KAY

    YOUH!

  7. no..

  8. How would you classify him as mediocre when most people (even non-Yankees fan) say he's a borderline Hall of Famer?

Munson is held in high regard because he was there when the Yankees returned to prominence in the '70s and he was the team's captain. And I'm sure much of the emotion has to do with the way he died and what he meant to the fans.

R.I.P., Thurman Munson. Forever our Captain.

  9. You clearly don't know who Thurman Munson is do you

He was the soul and captain of the Yankees when he played with them in the 70's and his tragic death hurt many fans, he meant everything to the Fans and the team

  10. Think of Varitek, he was like that. More important than stats show.

He was the captain and a gamer.  You'll notice that the Yankees won the two year prior to his death, but not for a long time afterward.

Plus, dying at the top of his game didn't hurt his image.  There was a movement among yankee fans to have his five year hall of fame eligibility waived, citing Roberto Clemente having it done after being killed in a plane crash a few years earlier.  Sanity took over and it wasn't done.  There is a big difference between a mission of mercy that clemente was on and the vanity of flying your own plane.  And also, his career was a little too short by most standards.

  11. What's up with you?

  12. He was a winner and a leader. He played hard all the time and never disrepected the game or the fans. Most of all, he was respected in the clubhouse. Today's sissified players could learn a lot from his example of how to play the game.

  13. this question should be in the"i'm going to he;ll section.he was a great yankee-coming from me(go sox)
