On the Blackberry Curve 8310 red (crimson) backlight?

How does the Blackberry Curve 8310 (red) keys backlighting work. I know how the silver one's keys work but there completely lit up and the red ones keys are black and white? how does it work? Do the black keys actually light up?

Yes, the lights light up when needed( i believe they are dimmed better at night or for whenever the phone is in a dark place, sort of like how the flash works for certain photo environments).  But yes they're quite easy to see. Im not sure how much easier or the same the key lights on the silver one are, but the red will get the job done.
