On the dog Island (wii) game how do you send letters back to you family? ?

Everytime i go to the postman it says mail and then send but when i click on send the dog postman says that i dont have anything to send?

I wasn't ever able to send any mail, except for the items that my mom and sister asked for.  At certain points in the game, you'll get letters from your mom and your sibling asking for certain things, like a bouquet of lilies or a certain kind of fish.  Once you get the item, you can come back to the mailbox and send it to your family.  Those were the only times I could send mail.
