  1. Sgt.'s are placed into supervisor postions and have other officers under thier comand. He has certain jobs that must be completed by him/she and must be signed off only by him/her. A detective is called in when something huge occurries like a murder, or a kidnapping. It's the Sgt.'s job to make the call if a detective is needed or not. A detective also investigates patrol officers field reports if needed. This may be a little long but it will be very good info. to pass on to your friends. This is to show you how officers become Sgt.'s and Detectives.  To become a Sgt. you must have 2yrs.on street patrol and 4yrs.for a Detective. The patrol officer will conduct an investigation on lets say a breaking and entering of a residence or a business. To get permoted someday to a Sgt. this patrol officer ( which has no rank at the time ), will do his very best to conduct the best investigation he/she can. Answering six questions if possible at the scene. The six questions are, WHO,WHAT,WHEN.WHERE,WHY, and HOW. Reason to answer these question. If the patrol officer can answer all six questions there will be no need for the detective to conduct a further investigation. Meaning the patrol officer just made a statement to the Chief that hia s**+* is togather. The only thing the Sgt.and detective can do at this point after the patrol officer turns in his/her field report is sign off on the back as such & such officer has conducted a full and complete investigation locating the suspect and evidence to convict same in court. Do this enough time and in 2yrs.the patrol officer will not have a problem becoming the next Sgt. The only other problem the patrol officer will have is having all the other patrol officers trying to do the same thing. Now I mention answering all six of the investigtive questions at the scene. In the five years I'v been in law-enforcement only a hand few of reports from any officer has answered all six questions. Reason, it's just really hard to answer all six questions at the scene. All six questions will or may be answered at a later time but not at the scene. This is why I say, if the patrol officer can answer all six questions at the scene. He/she will not have a problem becoming the next Sgt.. When the next Sgt.'s job becomes availible, and if there are several officers of put in for the postion. Guess what the Chief does? You better believe it, He/she looks back on every patrol officers record form court case wins to missed sick days even to see if the officer checked on their tour of duty on time. The best record wins !  Now you know a little bit about why officers are so hard up on the streets to make charges and arrest. This is also why when you go to court and see the officers get upset at the defence attorney's trying to turn their case around to win. Remember, he/she needs as many wins as possible to look good at that Sgt.'s interview. I guess that's why I am still just a patrol officer after five years. You want see s**+* on my nose when you come see me in court.  I truly believe in puting myself in your place when I stop you. I don't charge ever little thing, and I don't arrest people with the drop of a hat. Three things I will not let go, 1- Imparied driving, 2- Child restraints, and 3- Lieing & steeling. Lieing and Steeling go togather. Ever heard an answer from a thief. After asking them if they broke into such & such and took such & such and you have the evidence on them even a video showing them committing it. " I didn't break into that place and take anything!" Never fails, it's the same answer every time. I hate that ! I worked to hard to get what I have and so did the people I protect everytime I check on duty !   Sorry about the long response, but you know alot of info. now !  Hope I answered your question in all this !

  2. Sgt is a rank

Detective is the name of the job title much like Officer Gomez and Sgt. Gomez

  3. Good question.  Must be different in every jurisdiction.  In my area all detectives are actually called investigators, and all of them are sergeants or higher.

  4. Detective is a job title, Sergeant is a rank.  You can be both or either.
