On the subject of sadism what causes sexual gratification from humiliation of others?

I could not fathom such a person until I became exposed to such behavior, and therefore found out the hard way. Actually, I had never heard of such a thing, or can understand how this can happen to a human being. Any psychiatrists out there with a professional opinion?
