  1. Yes.  Its the 45th biggest in the world.  When you consider there are about  370 with a population of 1 million or greater, then that makes Toronto on a world scale large.

Take the largest 100 Urban centres in the world and exclude all those that have a population of 10 million or more and the average population is about 5 million, which is less than Toronto has.

Are wise, Toronto is one of the largest cities with a population of between 6 million and 5 million.

On the world scale, Toronto is an Incipient Global City (beginning of one) which puts it in a vey elusive class.

    Edit:

London has close to 9 million and Paris is over 10 million, which means Toronto would have to add another Vancouver just to rival London in size for population.

  2. With a regional population of about 5.6 million, the Toronto area is the largest urban area in Canada and one of the larger urban areas in North America. As such, and given the general high per capital income, Toronto is an economic engine of great consequence in Canada and the world.

The Toronto area's population is nearly as big as some of the larger urban areas in Europe (London, Paris), but it is much smaller than Mexico City, Sao Paulo, and a number of cities in Asia with populations of 15 million or more. On the other hand it has a total economic impact almost as great as some of the cities that are much larger since Canadian incomes are much higher than those in Brasil, Mexico, India or China.

In short, in both population size and economic importance Toronto is a big city by world standards but not among the very biggest.
