On the xb360 what is an acheivement what you unlock when playing? & how do they benefit you?

its just something game programmers put in the game, it doesn't mean anything, and offers you no special rewards or free stuff, its just a way of comparing your gaming 'ability' to others.  You might get one for completing a certain level on a given difficulty, or by killing so many people with a specific weapon

They just show up on your gamercard. That's all. Gamers love to be able to brag.

An achievement for the 360 is just like a kind of reminder telling you that you have done a task for the game designated as noteworthy. For example, play through the game's hardest skill level or collect all the secret items.

But really the achivements don't benefit you at all. There is no prize of any sort for getting a high gamerscore or unlocking all of the achievements for one game. It's just to show that you've played a lot or done all the possible challenges that one game can offer (in short, it's to show off!)
