  1. I know McSorley and Sather was the Oilers GM

  2. The "Great" Peter Pocklington was the owner for Edmonton at the time.  Pocklington was involved in alot of businesses in Alberta... even known as somewhat of a corporate raider.  Rumour has it some business deals went sour... so after the Oilers won the cup in 88, Pocklington had plans to deal Gretzky away... probably to save some money.  He was shopping around, but Mcnall (forget the first name) owner of the LA kings agreed to Gretzky's pre-requs for the deal which included the trading of  Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski to join him in LA.  Gretzky then had to request a trade from Pocklington in order to do this... amazingly enough Pocklington agreed to trade all three players in exchange for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, $15 million in cash, and the Kings' first-round draft picks in 1989.

This trade enraged Canadians so much (except Calgary fans... we were pretty happy because he was an Edmonton player at the time)... that and NDP leader in the House of Commons tried to instate a bill that would block the trade.  Most saw it as a sell out trade... most saw Gretzky as the symbol of Canadian hockey and now he wasn't playing for a Canadian team.....long story short... made lots of people mad.

but the Oilers won the cup again in 1990, and my Flames swept Gretzky's Kings in four straight games in the 1989 playoffs en route to their only Cup ring.

the Kings never did win a cup... neither did any other team Gretzky ever played for after Edmonton.

I think it's a valuable lesson that one player cannot make a team.

    I think it's a valuable lesson

  3. Oilers owner Peter Pocklington traded Gretzky, Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski to the Kings for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, three first-round draft picks and, 15 mill. ( the three first rounders were jason miller, martin rucinsky and nick stajduhar )

The owner of the oilers pulled this trade off, the gm didn't know.
