  1. " Where do I go from here  "

Back to the USA , to apply for a work permit. You cannot do that from within Canada.

Please follow the rules, which apply to everyone.

If you work illegally in Canada, and you are caught, it will be the last time that you are going to be here. And  of course before we send you back home, you may get to see one of our lovely prisons, from the inside.

    Do the right thing,

    Jim B. Toronto.

  2. Canada (my country) wants and needs skilled and law-abiding immigrants who will be self-sufficient, but for some reason the government makes it rough for such people wanting to come here.

In other words, it is more difficult that a lot of people think to emigrate to Canada.

The fact that you are American will not be taken into account whatsoever, other than for language points.  Prospective immigrants get points for speaking either English or French, but no extra points for both.

Unless you have unique skills, in a job that cannot be filled by a qualified available Canadian, or unless you have a blood relative or spouse (not a girlfriend) willing to be financially responsible for you for ten years, your chances are not good.

I'm sorry to bring bad news, but you're better off with straight goods.  Canadians wishing to emigrate to the US (about the same number as Americans wanting to come here) face a similar hassle.

  3. you can stay for up to 6 months without anything but working or staying longer check the official site for immigration

If you marry your girlfriend if canadian.. its the easiest fastest surest way I'd think.  Other than that you can request a temporary work visa  (same site above) Or you can take the test to see if you qualify as a "skilled worker" to become permanent resident.     To apply for citzenship comes later after living here a few years.

  4. You need a work visa or work permit.  A few options are available to you depending on if you qualify.

Only a few "working holiday visas" are handed out each year. These are nice because you can work for a limited time and then decide what you want to do from there. Less restrictions and requirements for attaining the visa.

A "skilled worker visa" has several levels of qualification and a point system attached to the process.

Or you can get a "work permit" but you need the full cooperation of your employer and you need to prove you aren't taking a job away from a potential Canadian worker.

These are super basic answers, you can find more information on this website, at least it is a start!

    Good luck!!!
