On what bases can one say that art correlates with civilization?

  1. I would say hand in hand.  Art is a method of communication.  Communication must be at a heighten degree in order to achieve civilization.  More exchange of thought and products.  The products were more highly regarded if decorated with art.  In essence, the product communicates more.  More communication, more art, more civilized.  My thoughts, anyway.

I seem to recall my old art history text saying that there is believed to be a general trend that art starts out realistic and becomes more abstract but there are also examples of the reverse (like the Nigerian River region from the Nok, Igbo, Benin, and Yoruba).  If you want to read very good work about art and culture, look up anthropologist Alfred Gell.

  3. As far as I know art does not "correlate" with civilization, but rather it is a reflection of culture.
