Question:

Once I get the adoption packet from Family Services, do I need to begin the process right away?

My husband is in the Navy, so we (he, myself, and our son) currently live on an American Navy Base in Naples, Italy. We want to adopt after we move back to the United States next year, but I'm excited so I want to order the info packet now. Is that okay? Or should I wait until I get back to the United States?

I know that we can adopt while we are here, but we think it is best to wait until we get back to the United States.

  1. You can get the packet now, and should.  You will need to read, reread, and digest all the info!

And, ask lots of questions, and do your homework.  Join some online support groups for waiting parent.  Find one in your area now as well.  I am sure there is an adoption support group there in Naples!

You may also want to set up your homestudy, so that as soon as you return to the states, you can get that started.  Sometimes that takes three months to complete.

    Good luck!  It's exciting!

  2. Nope, you can start the process whenever you're ready.

  3. Wait because how would you do a home visit while you're in Italy - unless you are willing to accept the child earlier.

  4. I think you can fill out the paper work any time you want. You would have to wait until you get to the US to start the main process but there is a TON of background info that they want to know about you and your husband and your families. I would not see the harm in starting that now. It would give you a head start. Adoption is a very long process. I know when my parents decided they wanted to adopt they had to wait about 7 years before they found me. But of course they began the process in the late 70's so I'm sure things are different now. I think it is wonderful that you have decided to open your home to a child that needs someone to love and care for them. So good luck and Congrats!

  5. That depends on how long you intend to wait and if you know exactly what town or county you'll live in. You could order it just to see what exactly you need.  When we started, they wouldn't give the packet till they came to the house to speak to hubby and I personally.  You could start by making copies of all birth certificates, social security cards, military i.d.'s, drivers licenses, marriage certificates, divorce papers, proof of insurance papers, etc. Some states or agencies require auto biographies for you and husband which are very lengthy to do.
