Once a racehorse develops bone spurs and a bone chip on his knee, how is it typically treated??

Can a racehorse still race under these conditions?? Are there alternative forms of treating this?? What are the risks involved when racing a horse with spurs and bone chips??

  1. The typical treatment for this is surgery.  If you check out any of the Thoroughbred rescue websites, many of these horses are retired from racing because of these same problems.

    However, one Kentucky Derby winner was overlooked at all of the auctions because of bone chips...his owners did not think they would be a problem and of course he won the biggest thoroughbred race of all with them.  That was War Emblem.

  2. 1 yes 2 yes 3 Lot of risk , depending is the bone spur floats ( meaning move around ) or is in a place where it stays away from the joints ,
