I am stuck on this question i just cant decide what to do! (betta breeding)

Should i breed sibling pairs? Would they get deformities? I know its good to keep the lines though.

Should i breed a male and female from seperate? I know it could mess up the lines. But i dont want deformities.

  1. The probability that you will get some deformed betta babies is high no matter what you do because all bettas are genetically far removed from the original wild caught natural species.  The specific colors and fin characteristics are in essence unnatural and could be considered a type of deformity.  All professional fish breeders cull poorly shaped fish with obvious defects in fin or body shape and use the culls as feeders.  In addition to genetic deformities, you could also experience developmental deformities caused by water temperature or water quality, food quality, pathogens or parasites, etc.  You can either give your best care and resources to your best looking and healthiest baby fish, or make your good fish share vital space and food with deformed siblings.

  2. Fish are not like people. You breed for color and all around structure of the breeding pair.Large fins and body conformity are what you want.Keep in mind the female you pick may not be the one the male will pick, its a good idea to have two or more females.

  3. there is a 50% chance that they could have deformities but the other 50% could be practically normal hope this helps u out and good luck if u decide to breed

  4. Thats a good question.  First off, there are a lot of varebiles involved with that question.  There are dominent and recessive jeans dealing with color to fin type.  You could bread two half moons and end up with 1/4 half moon, 1/2 viel tail, and 1/4 double tails.  It all depends on how good the breading stock is.  Concentrate on eather color (ie. Butterfly) or fin type (ie half moon or Crown tail)

For the first few spawns I would defentally recommend that you inbread the best fish from each spawn to get the best quality fish to start with.  (You know the breader didn't sell you his/her breading stock) so have a spawn or two so you can pick the best breading stock, then start looking for simular fish from another area to inculperate and define your line.

Inbreading fish is not going to cause deformities like it does in humans.  Altho, if you do get an albino, two headed or three tailed fish please let me know.  I got some good money for ya'.  LOL
