Is it okay to send out in a plain old CD case, and just get a sharpie and label your CD and ship out? Should I go the extra mile, or do they even care?

  1. I recommend getting one of those yellow bubble mailers

to give it protection if you're mailing it. Otherwise, there's a good chance it will be damaged in the mail.

You should go the extra mile..it will make a better impression.

And save you wasted time and energy.

  2. Anything you can do to set your package apart from the other hundreds of applicants is a good thing.  It will show the PD that you are willing to take the "extra step," to be a little better than the the others applying for the same position.

  3. As someone who has hired (and fired) at several stations, I can say that the presentation of the package DOES make a difference. Just writing with a sharpie on the label may give the impression that you're not willing to go the extra step to create an excellent product. Just the thing to kill a job before they even hear your CD. Use no more than 90 seconds of your best stuff edited together, and try to include some clips of any production you've done if possible. Total CD time should be no more than 2 minutes. A PD or GM will usually only listen to the first 30 seconds or less, so start it off with your hottest stuff.
