Once in a blue moon line-up gathered for the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic
What sets aside the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic on the card from any of the rest of the features of the two-day extravaganza, is the display of talent by fillies who are no less than champion legends already. My Miss Aurelia, Questing, Royal Delta and Awesome Feather are impossible to ignore, with two of them putting up their unbeaten records at risk.
Last year, the Godolphin owned, Questing, ended fifth in the Grade 1 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies against, My Miss Aurelia. Her second trip to North America has to bring back way more than that, and luckily the connections have high spirits about her chances after the training, improvement and accomplishments of a year.
The last time that the Steven Asmussen trained, My Miss Aurelia, and the Kiaran McLaughlin conditioned, Questing, raced, were together in the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx over a mile and half a furlong on 22nd September.
The third post defeated the favourite entry of the race, Questing, by a head’s mark.
"I think it's the best race of the two days," George Bolton, one of the owners My Miss Aurelia "As a racing fan, I can't wait to see who wins. I think there's a chance that one of them steps up and shows a truly brilliant performance. I hope it's us.”
Questing’s trainer commented:
"I hope Questing breaks from the gate cleanly and goes into the lead with Love And Pride sitting in second and leaving us alone.
"Ideally, it would be a 48s half (first half-mile). We want to be forwardly placed. At Parx we should have gone on at the half-mile but Irad Ortiz is a good young rider and he knows her.”
The connections of the unbeaten, Awesome Feather, are happy to see their representation in the race like this and the matching magnitude of competition that the audience get to enjoy once in an era.
Despite this height of opposition, many still have their hopes attached with the winner of the 2011 edition of the race, Royal Delta. She has already proved her ability, but this time the ground conditions are fast, and not the same as Churchill Downs, where she bagged the prize money last year.
