Once you select a name in game lobby, you have the option to send them a priv message, why does this not work?

Question

When in the lobby, clicking on a name brings up another window. I want to send a private message. I type the message then click on the send button. The message does not send as others do not recieve it and I don't recieve others messages. I don't have messenger, nor do I want it. I do have the most recent Java update.

Can someone please help?

yahoo blocks that option in order to cut down on cheating.

only open messages in lobby or rooms works.
