Ondrej Pala to collide with Konstantin Airich in 12-round unification bout – Boxing news
Konstantin Airich, the current IBF Intercontinental heavyweight champion, will take on Ondrej Pala, the current WBO European heavyweight title holder, in a 12-round unification bout on March 9, 2012, a brawl that will have both titles on the line.
The duo will headline the pay-per-view organised by Ahmet Oner of Arena Box-Promotions and the ring for the event will be stretched at Spor Salonu arena situated in Trabzon, Turkey.
Airich and Pala have a history as they previously collided in 2009. The duo entered the ring for a 10-round non-title bout which was won by Pala via majority decision. Even then Airich and his camp were of the view that the German lost by just a nick.
Airich, 33, has been in a total 29 bouts and came out victorious in 22. He has collected 16 of his wins by knockout. A keener look at the German number four heavyweight’s resume shows that his brawling abilities are on a constant decline.
Nine out of Airich’s last ten opponents were rookies- one was even making a debut when Konstantin gifted him his career’s first defeat. The only heavy duty opponent he collided was Tye Fields, a bout that he lost by knockout in just the first round.
Pala, on the contrary has an impressive rather intimidating resume. He has been in a total 32 bouts and came out victorious in 30. He has collected 21 of his wins by knocking out the opponents brutally. Since his last defeat against Denis Boytsov, the 27-year-old
Czech is on a huge 19-bout win streak.
Pala recently nailed Oleksiy Mazikin to grab the vacant WBO European title and later on successfully defended the gold against Darnell Wilson. The second skirmish with Airich will also be Pala’s second title defence. A bird’s eye comparison of both pugilists
shows that Pala has a good upper hand over Airich and he seriously outguns him not only by his experience but also by his long win streak.
When asked to comment about Airich during the pre-bout press conference, Pala commented, “I have beaten Airich before and I will beat him again. But this time it will be no hard work for the judges. I never promise to knock somebody out but I will make it
very clear that I am better than him.”
Airich, while replying Pala’s comment, shared some serious intimidating stuff and commented “I am perfectly prepared for this fight. I have been in training camp with Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko in Austria. And I know that I can and will beat Ondrej Pala.
I can see in his eyes that he knows that I can beat him. I will show the world why I call myself “the Sandman” – I will put Pala to sleep!”
