Ondrej Pavelec gets hot as Winnipeg Jets overtake Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 -NHL Match Update
The team work could be seen on Monday night, November 14, 2011, as Ondrej Pavelec made a number of critical saves and helped the Winnipeg Jets to their first victory in six contests over the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-2, at the sold-out MTS Centre in Winnipeg,
Manitoba, Canada.
Winnipeg had one win in the Month of November and was dropping quickly in the ranks of the Eastern Conference after having lost five straight, but have finally bounced back with a win over a tough team like the Lightning.
The Jets have started their three game home stay on a good foot and hope to continue winning the remaining two against the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers before taking off for another three on the road.
Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien scored two straight in the first period to give Winnipeg a strong lead for the upcoming minutes. After scoring his sixth of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, Kane set up Byfuglien on his own when
noticing an open opportunity to extend his teams lead nearly 10 minutes later.
Mark Flood widened the gap even further with his third of the season during their first and only power play opportunity of the period, which was closely following by Tampa Bay’s Martin St. Louis for their first of the night midway through the second and
Winnipeg captain, Andrew Ladd.
Tim Stapleton secured the match with his second of the season at the halfway point through the third period, putting the Lightning behind by four points and only 10 minutes to play.
Tampa Bay’s young shooting sensation, Steven Stamkos, scared the crowd with their second goal only 22 seconds later which spread rumour that Tampa Bay was looking to tie the game in the upcoming minutes but the Jets limited the Lightning to only five shots
in the final period, ultimately resulting in their victory.
The Jets play the Washington Capitals on Thursday, November 17, while the Lightning will start their own three-game home stay against the Pittsburgh Penguins the same day.
Winnipeg is still number 14 in the Eastern Conference with only 15 points, which makes it crucial for them to win their upcoming contests in order to move up in the ranks.
