One Italian Grand Prix is enough for one season – Ferrari
Team Ferrari had a roller coaster of a ride in 2010. The team had a tough first half while they had a great second half in the 2010 Formula 1 season. Although Ferrari had a great start to the 2010 season as they scored a 1-2 finish, they were unable to maintain
their performance until the second half of the season.
At the German grand prix, Felipe Massa was leading his first race after his return to the sport this year but it seems he was not destined to win his first race as he was asked by his team to back out and let his teammate Fernando Alonso win the race in
order to keep his title run alive.
The Italian team fought for the drivers’ title until the very last race and Alonso was leading the title until then but it was just not meant to be as Fernando lost the championship just by 4 points.
However, the team was happy about the regulation regarding team orders although they did state that they won’t be happy about two Italian Grand Prix in one season. They believe that all the 2011 Formula 1 season is already flooded with 19 races and since
Monza is a legendary track, it is enough for an Italian race.
Monza is expected to host the Italian Grand Prix until 2016 and according to Stefano Domenicali, he believes that having two events in a single country is not justifiable at all.
“Our position is very clear and leaves no room for interpretation. Our sport is increasingly expanding the number of countries hosting a grand prix and all the teams are in agreement about that,” he told the Media.
Even if the FIA decides to keep the European Grand Prix in Italy, the team won’t be happy about it. There are speculations that the FIA might decide for a Roman Grand Prix in 2016 that might be a street race.
“Therefore it is inevitable that it will no longer be possible to have two races in the same nation. It’s not the job of the teams [to] choose where a grand prix is held – that’s up to the commercial rights holder. Everything else is pure speculation,” he
added.
Spain is the only country that currently holds two races in a year.
