I have a one night layover in Frankfurt Germany. I want to eat somewhere nice, old, colorful , that has authentic German food, and then possibly a good club or bar afterward. Any suggestions to make my one night stay in Frankfurt memorable?

  1. What happens in Frankfurt....stays in Frankfurt

  2. Gee...If you only have 1 night...shoot over to Sachenhausen for the evening. Drink some apple wine and talk with the locals.

By the way the "Reeperbahn" is in HAMBURG!!! If you want to do THAT you need more than 1 night for it.

  3. Since you only have one night your best bet would be Sachsenhausen - any one of the S-Bahns or RE(Regional Express) Trains from the Frankfurt Airport to the Frankfurt Hbf(Main train station) then a nice walk(15-20 min) over to Sachsenhausen, or take another train to Sud Bahnhof. Or, just ask - Frankfurt is very used to Tourists looking for whatever.

In Sachsenhausen there are many apple wine bars that serve typical German food. Check out the menus(often in English) normally posted by the door and find a place you like. If the menu has 'Hand Kase mit musik'(hand cheese with music) then you have found a place serving authentic German food. But, if you are looking for the 'Hollywood' thing of a blond dressed like Heidi serving schnitzel&noodles and singing like the von Trapp Family then you are in the wrong area of Germany - you have to go south fo that.

Have a good trip and a nice time in Frankfurt.

P.S. If you really want authentic German food&beer, really meet the locals and relax, and make your one night in Frankfurt a memorable one - then try the Amsterdam Sauna and Taverne(men only), or you can take a walk around the Kaiser Strasse near the Frankfurt train station - that is the 'Red Light' district of Frankfurt.

  4. hit up a w***e house

  5. I have to agree with the folks who have suggested Sachsenhausen.  This is a great area that has authentic German restaurants but also a vibrant nightlife.  I reco Adolf Wagner's, an Apfelwein place on Schweitzer Strasse.  This has a mix of tourists and locals and is busteling every night.  You can order great wurst there or schnitzel, and saurkraut or potatoes too.  They also have a huge plate of all kinds of meat. :-)  This is a traditional Apfelwein place- which is a drink that is a local Frankfurt specialty.  You can order a "bembel" of this, which is a large ceramic pitcher filled with the Apfelwein, and then you also order with this a bottle of sparkling water.  You pour the Apfelwein with a bit of the water into the Apfelwein glasses they'll also bring you.  Very tasty!  And you can't get this stuff anywhere but in the Frankfurt area.  They also have great fruit Schnapps here, which I reco after your meal.  The interior of the restaurant is very "German" as well.

The great this about Schweitzer Strasse is that when you walk out of the restaurant, just head down the street in the direction of the city and you'll find many bars along the way just full of people.

To get here you just take the U1,2, or 3 to Schweiter Platz (in the direction of Sudbahnhof from Hauptwache), and then walk south (away from the river) on Schweitzer strasse until you arrive (you can't miss it.)

Another suggestion after dinner would be to head back to Hauptwache and nearby (you'll need to google for the address) is a very cool bar called Mephisto- not a club but very laid back.  You enter the building then go downstairs- it is in an old bunker basically.  The walls are all brick and arched- you feel a bit transported back into the past.

Whatever you end up doing, enjoy!  It is a great city. :-)
