One aspect of using augumentative communication tools & strategies is that some children cannot read.?

what could we use insteat of letters & words to assist a person who has literacy difficulties to access these tools?

the communication tools themselves must be able to "read" for the user. for instance, user can speak into a voice recorder which translates it into printed words. and printed words can be translated into a voice reader.

You could try recorded books.  I highly recommend Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (I am one of their volunteer readers).  Users do not have to be either blind or dyslexic, merely unable for some physical or cognitive reason, to use standard printed books.

And all their books are read by people who are proficient in the necessary subject area.  So you won't be struggling through biochemistry listening to someone who doesn't know what a dehydration synthesis is.

Pictures. In my other answer to your other question I mentioned PEC's. Its wonderful and we use it with kids that are 3 and obviously they can not read. As time goes my you can use picture/word combos and the child may begin to memorize the word. Many times words will not work with these kids because they can not even process audiable language must less the written word.
