Ok, I live in a 1 bdrm. apt. In CA. My therm. is always set on about 78 degrees. My electric bill usually is around $80.00, but this month it's $180. I called PGE and they checked my record, this is abnormal, so they are going to send someone to read my meter. I called my apt. manager and she said she was going to send someone to check my AC because it's been shaking the whole apartment every time it turns on. If it is the AC do I still have to pay the bill or is that the apartment mangagers responsibility?

  1. It is still your bill.   It would not suddenly become some ones elses bill.

  2. It is your decision to use the ac unit in its present condition, so it is your bill. Sometimes electric meters go bad and need to be replaced, but if you have a heavy electrical user going bad it will likely be your cause. An air conditioner that is shaking the house is very suspect.

If you continue to use that defective ac unit, you should expect further high electric usage.

But if your problem is a higher price per kWh, fixing your ac will go only so far. You may have to adopt means to reduce intake of heat. But do those anyway.

  3. It is your responsibility not the apartment managers.

  4. It is still your responsibility to pay the bill, but if it turns out that the AC unit did cause a little higher electric bill, you could see if the manager is will to pay the difference.

  5. If the bill is sent to you, then it's your responsibility.

But yeah $180 for a 1 bedroom is CRAZY!

  6. I have you beat,my electric bill was $205 for a 778 square foot 1 bedroom apt.Sorry but I don't think a bad unit has anything to do with how high your bills are,it's the electric companys jacking up prices.2 months ago I was paying 11.50 cents per killowate hour and now it's 18.75 per kh.
