I have a 60 gal no pilot gas heated water tank. It is ~7 years old as is the house. I have been in the house for ~ 4 months and used to have crazy hot water (scalding) coming out of all the faucets. I lowered the thermo setting 2 months ago and it has been better ... as I think about it, however, the temperature has been gradually decreasing ever since.

Today I noticed that I had no hot water and went downstairs, where I noticed that the HWT clicks every 30 seconds or so and the fan on top of the HWT cycles on and off. I looked through the manual and troubleshooting guide, but nothing worthwhile was mentioned. I ended up "reseting" the thermostat, but I don't hink that will do anything. Anyone see this before? What was the issue and how can I fi it? Thanks

  1. check if the pipes connected to the water heater are galvanized, if they are they are cloged or your water heater need to be replaced.

  2. Hot water heaters are dangerous things.  Has anyone seen the Mythbusters episode where they blew a hot water heater through a mini-(built to code)-house?  Don't mess with it.  Could be a limit switch broken.  Call a professional.

  3. check pilot light

  4. Reseting it is the only way unless you want ice cold water
