One large cake for dessert, or a variety of miniature desserts?

We are going to our new friends' house for dinner tonight. They are inviting several young couples who are new to the area over for dinner and games. I asked if I could bring anything and the hostess encouraged me to bring dessert.

I'm going to get it at a local bakery. My question is... I can get a whole chocolate by death or strawberry shortcake dessert (their two most popular desserts) for $22.95... OR for the same price I could get 17 Mini desserts which are basically just little individual versions of the big desserts. I'm leaning toward doing the mini desserts and just set them out on a pretty platter so everyone has a variety to choose from. There will only be 8 in attendance so everyone would be able to have 2.

Do you think it would look better to take the one whole cake, or the platter of minis?

  1. The appeal of a choice is maybe a good thing, some are allergic to chocolate or (heaven forbid) just don't like it...and I do like to sample other  things.  Give them a choice.

  2. Small ones cause you dont know if everyone wants cake. they might be on a diet or is allergic to something. But if you get small individual ones there are more to chosee from.

  3. I would go with the mini desserts.  Would look better and obviously add variety which is always a great thing.  The platter would also look really nice if you put some strawberries or little cups of mixed berries.

  4. platter of minis..sounds really cool to me. I like variety and sometimes some people just dont' like the one dessert you bring. Just can't please em all! I would go with the assortment.

  5. I would say mini desserts.  People can have a choice and try different things.  It would have a nice presentation also.

  6. very good question and yes i do think that the minis are better because the one big one would probably fill u up halfway and they can only get 1 slice while the smaller they r the more full u seem to get strange huh?

  7. go with the little ones you will have fewer left overs

  8. Oh, the mini desserts always look so wonderful on a platter!  And, everyone can choose what they like, or try something new ...   Since you don't know those people, they might not like chocolate or be allergic to it (my son-in-law is) or allergic to strawberries....  You could even scatter some dinner mints (or even Andes) around the platter.....

  9. I would get the mini desserts.  Not everyone may like chocolate or strawberry. So if you have a few of both, people will have a choice.  Good Luck :)

  10. I would go with the minis.  It's good to give a super sweet heavy dessert option and a light refreshing option too.  Not to mention, any leftovers will stay fresher!

  11. I would do the mini pastries.. Get a few spring flowers, such as tulips. Cut them short and place them in the center of the platter in a tiny vase, shot glass, anything small. Place the mini pastries around the flowers. You can also tuck in some miniature truffles. Pretty presentation.
