Is there a website with statistics on mile-time percentiles for different ages? How fast does an 18-year-old have to run a mile to be in the 10th percentile?

  1. 1 mile qualifying timings for various age-groups of physically fit boys: -
    - Opens:      6.30 secs
    - Under 16:   6.55 secs
    - Under 14:   7.20 secs
    - Under 12:   7.45 secs

  2. A 4:15 mile is well within the top percentile...don't kid yourself.  The runners world percentages are not percentiles based on the average person..they are normalized to a subset of elite athletes.  Obviously, 10 percent of the population is not "world class".  Otherwise it wouldn't be called world class.  It scares me that people are so bad at reading statistics and charts.  If you run a 4:15 mile at age 18, you are going to place very high at the finals of your state championship track meet.  Maybe 1 out of every 10,000 kids runs that fast at that age.
